Saturday January 10th, 2026, 10.30 a.m. – 3.30 p.m.
Come and hear why Alfred celebrated Twelfth Night. A talk will explain how Alfred began these celebrations, and you can see Alfred and Guthrum begin discussions about the future after Alfred’s victory over The Great Heathen Army!
See authentic crafts, both Saxon and Viking and watch the demonstrations creating textiles to decorate costumes revealing the wealth of the wearers. Alfred and Guthrum’s costumes reveal their regal positions!
Observe and hold the variety of weapons available, maybe try on a helmet, hold a shield and weapon for a photo. Talk to the warriors as to who might own which weapon and why.
Look at the different arrows and learn about their uses; hear how a person’s wealth determined what arrows would be available to them when hunting for food.
Meet our doctor as they share the medical treatments, how beliefs affected these and see some of the equipment our doctor uses.
